Reading of the Declaration of Independence

July 4 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Come to the George Taylor House (GTH) this 4th of July to see and hear how the Declaration of Independence was actually presented to the people of the Lehigh Valley back in 1776. Christopher Black from Easton’s Bachmann Players will convey the message of American independence just as it was presented 241 years ago by Robert Levers, upon his return from the Provincial Congress at Philadelphia’s Carpenter’s Hall.

This “interactive” reading of America’s Declaration of Independence – replete with patriots, loyalists, and muskets – will commence at 10 AM on July 4th!

Also featured at this year’s Independence Day celebration will be Gettysburg’s Antebellum Marine Band, who will render patriotic selections before and after the reading; the Catasauqua American Legion Color Guard, who will salute American independence with a musket salvo; and the Northampton County Militia, who will conduct live drills – and dispatch any lingering Tories!

Featured July 4th artisans include Greg Geiger, the Still River cordwainer (shoemaker); Harry Greenberger, late 18th century historian and gun maker; Craig Wetzell, blacksmith; and Jocelyn Schilling, beeswax candle maker.

Rounding out the celebration will be George Taylor House tours, including the in-process archaeological dig, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 11 AM to Noon; the newly stocked GTH Gift Shoppe; and light breakfast fare including pastries, muffins, juices, and coffee.

Please join us – rain or shine – on Tuesday, July 4th, from 9:00 AM till Noon for a truly unique, entertaining, and historically informative Independence Day experience – admission is FREE!
